Part of the problem with the Ubuntu install was indeed
the CD-RW media ( PNY ) I used. I "burned" the image
on to a CD-R (Imation), and the install proceeded as
expected. The display card still does not work properly
in the end, but that is a separate issue.

Why the CD-RW works with the "live" version of Ubuntu,
but not the "install" version is perhaps something the
developers might want to know. There is a lot to know
about CD's - see for example http://www.cdrfaq.org/
I was vaguely aware that this kind of thing could happen,
which is why I included the point in my original message
below. It's yet another topic that oen could go off in to
the wild blue yonder about if interested. For now, it's
enough for me to know the CD-RW media was the snag.
In my case anyway.

Thanks to everyone who pondered the problem some
and provided tips and suggestions. I'm mainly curious about
Ubuntu, and wanted to see what the fuss is about. I'm mildly
disappointed that it does not handle the display card, but that's
why one tries things. I'll likely look at some distributions in a
similar vein.

<DEFANGED_div>I downloaded the "live" and "install" versions of
Ubuntu 5.10, and then "burned" the image on to an
R/W CD using Nero.

The live version comes up, but eventually gets
in to trouble with the display. I get a rather confused
looking display, and for all practical purposes the
system is wedged. I ran the same CD on a much
older machine. It came up fine, but was far too
slow to be interesting.

The install CD and a blank hard drive results in
"Press a key to reboot." I press a key, and get back
to the same message. As many times as I care to play.
This also occurs on the older machine.

I'm mostly interested in the install. Does anyone
have any thoughts on what might be going on here?
Just for kicks, I tried the "make bootable disc" option
on Nero, but the result is the same. Is there anything
more to making the CD than using the "burn image"
option? Might there be any conceivable issue in
using an R/W media?
