The thing is... let them add the sudo option as an option because I
very much like the separation of the normal user and root. Don't take
away root and don't make the user root (via a default sudo setup).

Like I said originally, yes you can easily hack it and get root back. I
never like it when they take something away, especially control. That
is my problem with it. I don't run my GUI as root, that would be like
running in windows lol. But if I want to, it should be my option. All
the howto's and doc's that are made for this distro will be made from
the sudo perspective and in some cases won't work if you hack the box
to run in the normal *nix fashion. This lowers their value to me.

I want to set the root password, add my daughter as the user, hand her
the box and know she's not going to mess it up and I can get in to fix
it. She loves to tinker already (at 9) but she's not ready for root
lol. I just have more work to do to make it work right.

I like Ubuntu for the same reasons Benjamin mentioned.
Also, to the sudo complainers, is it really that hard to sudo passwd
and be done with it? I understand that you don't like Ubuntu changing
the paradigm, but it works better for many of the people with whom
I've walked through Ubuntu. None of these users would have maintained
seperate administrator and regular users accounts in Windows,
switching between when they needed to, because this would have been a
hassle. However, most understood the exposure to prompts for a
password to execute a single operation, since this happens in both XP
and OS X, depending on personal configurations.
RH7->Mandrake->Gentoo->FC->Ubuntu, and I think I'm staying here for awhile.

I switched to Ubuntu from Mandrake. I don't mind sudo. I like the
idea of sudo from a multiuser standpoint, but you are right, for a
(mostly) single user based distro it seems a little redundunt. I can
mess up my machine just as easily with sudo as I can with su.
I liked Ubuntu because of apt and the popularity of the distro creates
a lot of really nice documentation and howto's on the web. I need
this simple to follow type of documentation:)

I have to say that I firmly agree with David on this one. The last time I
installed Ubuntu I was really frustrated with the no root, just use sudo
aspect of it. I really prefer simply logging in as root at times. It's
true I have screwed things up that way, but live and learn - Ubuntu's model
was simply too annoying for me.
I am pretty firmly in the Debian camp for desktops right now, with my
preference for servers being RedHat (at least for the time being).

Any distro without clutter is a good thing but... (I'm gonna gripe here

I tried ubuntu a couple of weeks ago. It installed easy enough. As easy as
anything else I think.
I don't like how they tried to remove the su to root concept (there is no
root password so you can't "su" and must use sudo). I got done with my
install and was scratching my head like a lot of other uses thinking "they
never asked for my root password". I know what they are trying to do and
anyone with experience can "fix things" and go back to using "su" to manage
their box in no time. If you screw your box up as root, well.. geesss.. of
course thats your fault... but let me make my mistakes LOL.
Does it bother anyone else that they are changing things like that? I
happen to like god mode... root is one place I still have control in my life
LOL
For my 2 cents on a good distro, I've fallen into the Debian camp now...
give me a debian net install cd anytime! I must have my apt. Goodbye redhat
and fedora!
Oh and I love simply mepis for a live cd linux. Any other good new live cd
linuxes out there?

I love debian, but ubuntu gives me everything I like about debian without
the clutter. I used suse for a while, but I found the same clutter as I
found in debian. Mandriva was not for me at all, and xandros was like
windows with a linux kernel (not good at all, stay away!). I like kanotix,
but I want something more permanent. I'm thinking of trying slax or mepis
(simply or otherwise), any thoughts on those 2 distros? I love distros!

So did Ian, but then they forked, so I heard.
