Actually, the solution was much simpler - CUPS was not running! Must 
have died when I was playing with a Zebra printer about a month ago 
(I never reboot this workstation, just hibernate). Restarted the cups 
service, fine; ckconfig, on; localhost:631 now has all the printers 
from the server I had configured a few years ago. Tried to print a 
document, viola'!

Thanks for the cluestick - much more fun than getting a headache!
