Before going that farm, what specific version of Network Manager is
this?

Does Ubuntu provide an equivalent to openSUSE's "Factory" repositories
[where the 'latest' versions of packages can be retreieved]?  Perhaps
just bumping NetworkManager would provide an official solution.
NetworkManager has been evolving very rapidly lately.

Hopping over onto the NetworkManager list might not be a bad idea
either; they are usually fairly responsive.
