Michael has made a really good point here.  Many decry Debian's "too
infrequent" releases but Debian Testing is at least similar in quality
to a Ubuntu stable release.  I realize that fodder for some, but it's
true.

By the time Debian calls a package "stable" you can bet that it is.
This often means that a package is "out of date" in stable, but stable
is meant to offer stability, not bleeding edge.
