If something is that hot already
you'd better have your home owner's
insurance paid up!

Just a guess, but if it's been working
ever since I'd just go with it.  An
electrician might be able to test for
resistance or something, but only
if the connection is pretty bad.  But
if it is a marginal connection, you
might have to pay a person to come
around and try to wiggle everything
they can get access to.
