I happily left Godaddy a few months ago now when I was in the same position.
Gandi is highly spoken of, but since it was off-shore I didn't want to get
caught up in any international/legal caveats I didn't think of. (And,
The French!?)

So on that, I went with NameCheap (http://www.namecheap.com/)
Cheap domiain registrations/renewals/transfers with a 1yr free SSL
I've been extremely pleased with them, and I get full DNS control.
