[GRLUG] LINUX and NOT LINUX

In the NOT LINUX column, I checked
with Comcast this afternoon about a
launch date for the "Ultra" and "Extreme
50" cable modem packages. The latter
is 50 Mbps down and 10 Mbps up,
presumably with the same "boost" feature
now used. speedtest.net and
speakeasy.net/speedtest might well be the
only places you can see what you've got...

Anyway, the launch date for GR is
apparently first quarter of 2010. No
indication of cost, but if it's anything
like 3X the price of the 16 Mbps service
no one will buy it.

In the LINUX column, I discovered that
LINUX does not support Canon scanners.
I tried XSane and Scanlite. XSane will
produce a scan, but the colors are way
off, and I couldn't find a way to correct
them.

I then read on some Linux help page
the claim that Canon is not supported.
A guess is that Canon won't play ball
with device driver writers, and that so
far no one has had the wherewithall to
reverse engineer the Canon interface.

If this is wrong, and someone has, or
knows where to get, Canon drivers, I'd
like to know about it. I have a model
630.
