But then its value is only as good as its comparative efficiency wrt
other plug-in options.  And even that has to be compared to efficiency
of artificial hydrocarbon fuels.

The problem with the "air car" is that people see it as a way to get
something (transportation) using something like "air" as a fuel.
Every person who has ever tried to make the case for the air (or
water) car to me hasn't realized or believed that both approaches
require energy to prepare their "fuel", either by compressing the air
or splitting the water.
