$50K is good money for someone that
gets summer's off. And the mantra is
to "get my 30 years in and retire." In
many areas retire with 75% of their
working salary, and full medical benefits.
A standard gimmick today is to make
each teacher a principle for a few years
before retirement to bump their salary
level up a notch. This is common today
at the school system I attended.

How many of you out there will be looking
forward to similar deals? As long as
communities can afford it any way. Most
will be lucky to get pensions at all, and
forget those full medical benefits.

One could get in to a long winded thing
about who goes in to teaching anyway.
Before Vietnam it was often as not done
by women wanting a job with summers
off. During Vietnam it got to be a way to
avoid the draft, and then people that
went in to it for that reason discovered it
didn't pay well enough to support all
those kids produced just to make sure
they weren't drafted.

Any, such are the noble beginning of
the great dissatisfaction with pay. Odd
that the schools worked quite well 50
years ago.
