Don't know about VMWare, but QEMU (Free) with kqemu (non-Free, but
free) is just as fast, and consumes very little memory (on the order
of just a couple megabytes).  Xen gobbles up about 32Mb of ram for the
hypervisor, a bit more for the administration applications running on
the Dom0.
